2011 Educational Excellence Award

Weston Elementary and Borland Elementary have been recognized by the Michigan Association of School Boards with a 2011 Educational Excellence Award for their reading intervention program called ALL S.T.A.R.S. (Striving to Assist Readers Successfully.) All S.T.A.R.S. is an intensive reading intervention program for students in first, second, and third grades in the Imlay City Community Schools.

This program meets before the start of our school day at 7:30am. The students enrolled in this program are invited based on reading assessment data. They receive intense literacy instruction during that hour before school starts and this is in addition to the reading instruction that is provided during normal school hours. Students who attend this program are provided transportation and breakfast each morning.

ALL S.T.A.R.S. has shown very positive results since it began. Each cohort of students has shown significant growth in reading skills as identified through school-wide assessments such as NWEA and DRA2 scores and also in our third grade MSTEP results.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, principals from each building as well as program coordinators were invited to Bath, Michigan to receive their award at the MASB annual EdEx award luncheon. Congratulations Weston and Borland!
